About your workshop leader:
Dr Karen Luxford
BSc (Hons) PhD
In 2008-2009, Karen was a Harkness Fellow in Healthcare Policy the USA and studied exemplar health care organizations focused - centred care and the role of patient feedback in improving service.Dr Karen Luxford is General Manager at the National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre overseeing programs in cancer control, information, policy and practice. Karen has overseen the development, implementation and evaluation of a number of large national programs in a range of areas across the cancer care continuum. Karen’s interests include new models of care, patient care experience, promoting evidence-based best practice, and health services delivery.
Karen is an Honorary Associate of the School of Public Health, University of Sydney and founding Executive Committee member of the Health Services Research Association of Australia & New Zealand.

Measuring is an essential component of continuous quality improvement. Using measurement allows you to make informed decisions when changing your system, monitor the progress of improvement, see whether you are progressing towards your goals and objectives, minimise risk (as you can change course quickly if you find out you are not on track), and provide feedback on your progress.
This highly interactive session will focus on the practical application of quality improvement tools and techniques to measure for improvement. Small group work will involve different scenarios using quality improvement tools to explore opportunities for improvement and the effective use of measurement.
This workshop will help you:
- Formulate a clear idea about overall aims so you can focus on what is important
- Ensure that changes are linked to your organisation’s objectives
- Better understand of the importance of measurement
- Decide which type of measures you should be collecting
- Be exposed to quality improvement tools to identify measures
- Understand data quality and ways to improve data quality
- Present data in a meaningful way
